“Practice Makes Perfect” and other familiar myths that are getting in your way.

Hello! I’m Kris Fleming, Genius Cultivator, here to challenge two popular ideas you’ve probably heard your whole life:

  1. Practice makes perfect.

  2. You can be anything you want to be.

While these sayings might sound inspiring, they can also create unnecessary pressure. Let me explain why these beliefs don’t always hold up—and what we can do instead to embrace our true potential.

Myth #1: Practice Makes Perfect

Growing up, many of us were told that enough practice could make us excel at anything. But let’s be honest—no amount of practice can turn everyone into a pro athlete, an artist, or even a skilled mechanic. For example, I vividly remember a childhood experience where my mom encouraged me to play softball at a picnic. I was eight or nine years old, standing on the field in tears, begging her not to make me play. Sports were never my thing, no matter how much I practiced.

The truth? Practice improves skills, but it won’t create abilities where they don’t naturally exist.

Myth #2: You Can Be Anything You Want to Be

Another well-meaning message from my childhood was that I could be anything I wanted. It sounds empowering, but for me, it felt overwhelming. The reality is, not everything is possible for everyone. For instance:

  • I’m 43 years old, 5’7.5”, and never going to be six feet tall.

  • I’m not wired to be an accountant, even though I’m good with numbers. Details and formulas aren’t my forte.

  • Becoming a professional athlete or an auto mechanic? Definitely not in the cards.

What I’ve realized is that this idea of being “anything” can distract us from focusing on who we’re truly meant to be.

A Better Way: Embrace Your Zone of Genius

Instead of striving for perfection or chasing unattainable dreams, I encourage you to explore your unique aptitudes—your natural talents, strengths, and passions. This is what I call your “zone of genius.”

Here’s the thing: you’re not meant to fit into every role. You’re meant to thrive in the ones that align with your abilities and bring you joy.

If you’ve been stuck in the cycle of trying to live up to impossible expectations, let’s find another way. Together, we can uncover your genius zone and chart a path that fits YOU—not what others think you should be.
